Every fall, Apple gives employees a new reason to ask IT for a device upgrade. This year, there are several. The iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable, and the iPhone 18 Pro arrive alongside iOS 27, an update built around mobile simplicity. A lot of people are talking about the newest multi-SIM capability. Instead of two numbers on one phone, iPhone Handoff lets one number move between two iPhones, ready on whichever one you unlock.
With a $7 billion mobile productivity crisis affecting 80% of employees, there’s good reason to consider a feature like this. It’s not available for business accounts yet (Verizon plans to add it by year’s end, while other major carriers haven’t made official announcements), making now the perfect time to tackle the logistics: which devices are tied to which lines, who owns them, what policies apply, and what it all costs.
Let’s walk through this latest capability and what’s needed before rolling it out.
iPhone Handoff: One Line, Two Devices
The gist: A phone line can move between two iPhones – one device holds the main eSIM, and the second gets a companion eSIM tied to the same number.
How it works: The switch happens in the moment. An employee can move from one device to another in the middle of an active session and keep working without missing a beat.
What you need: Two iPhones running iOS 27 (available on iPhone 11 and later), signed in to the same Apple Account, connected to Wi-Fi, and a carrier that supports iPhone Handoff.
Why it’s different: No carrier add-ons, swapping SIM cards, or transferring eSIMs. The capability is built into the device as part of the latest operating system. Once it’s set up, you simply unlock the phone you want to use and the number follows you.
How Employees Could Use It
There are a lot of ways your employees could benefit.
International travel: An employee carries a dedicated travel iPhone, set up to meet your company’s security requirements, and leaves their primary work device at home. Their number travels with them, keeping them reachable just like always.
Field workers: Technicians, field workers, and site managers keep a rugged iPhone for the job site and a standard iPhone for their desk, all on one number.
Device refreshes: With iOS 27 on both phones and a carrier that supports it, employees could keep their old and new iPhones side-by-side while they move apps and data over, switching their number back and forth until the new phone is ready.
The Management Side: What to Know
Almost all (99%) of IT leaders say that traditional Mobile Device Management (MDM) tools can’t keep up with what mobile work now demands. Here’s where the gaps live.
Visibility. You need to know if two devices share one line, and which devices they are. This can get murky fast: an employee enables iPhone Handoff without telling IT, an old phone that should have been returned stays active as a backup, a personal iPhone gets added to a corporate line. Every gap in inventory is a place where security, support, and billing problems can blow up.
Ownership and policy. What happens if an employee moves a company line onto a personal device? Does your organization care? For some, that’s fine. For others, it’s a compliance issue. Either way, the answer should come from a clear policy. iPhone Handoff is brand new to the iPhone. For many mobile workforces, it’s new territory too. That likely means new policies.
Data and cost. Major carriers plan to charge $5-10 per month for the service. That adds up fast across a large fleet, and pricing will vary from carrier to carrier. On top of that, deleting the eSIM doesn’t stop the charges. The service needs to be turned off with the carrier, meaning forgotten setups can keep billing without you knowing it. You need the right tools and support to track where multi-SIM costs come from and to allocate usage and spend to the right people, departments, and budgets.
Important Questions to Ask
- Who should get it? Is this something for the whole company, or just your execs and road warriors to start?
- What’s your policy? Can a corporate line move to a personally owned device, and under what conditions? If the answer is “no” and you use a mobile device management (MDM) or unified endpoint management (UEM) solution, you can enforce your policy directly. If you don’t use an MDM or UEM solution yet, now is a good time to explore one.
- Can you see the full picture? Can you see every device each line is tied to in one place?
- Are your carriers ready? Not every carrier is on board yet – at least, not with corporate phone use. T-Mobile, for example, only offers iPhone Handoff for consumer devices.
- Can you track the costs? Can you allocate usage and spend accurately when one line spans more than one device?
- How will employees get their devices? What does ordering, kitting, shipping, and activation look like from start to finish?
