Cost-conscious businesses are increasingly buying unlocked smartphones for their workers, instead of more expensive smartphones with two-year service plans that are locked to a certain wireless U.S. carrier.
“Unlocked makes more sense,” said Craig Riegelhaupt, direct of product marketing for mobile at Tangoe, an IT and telecom expense management software and services vendor that functions as a consultant to thousands of large businesses.
Just two days before Samsung’s launch of the Galaxy S8 on Wednesday, the company announced it will consider using some recalled Galaxy Note7 smartphones for re-sale as refurbished or as rental phones.
One analyst bashed the plan as “disastrous,” while another said Samsung is performing a “balancing act” following the Note7 fallout when some units overheated and caught fire.
More than half of respondents in a survey conducted by mobility and telecom expense management (TEM) provider Tangoe say their job to manage mobile devices ploughs a lonely furrow.
In other words, of the 100 IT managers polled, across a variety of enterprises, very few are using enterprise mobility management (EMM) or managed mobility (MMS) offerings – although many plan to over the next two years.
