For 100 years—since 1919—people across the globe have been dedicating specific days to honor their friends through the exchange of flowers, cards, wrist bands, and other gifts. On April 27, 2011, the United Nations declared July 30 as the International Day of Friendship, although Friendship Day celebrations occur on different dates in many different countries.
Argentina, Brazil, Spain, and Uruguay celebrate Friendship Day on July 20. Bangladesh, Malaysia, India, and the UAE honor friends on the first Sunday of August each year. In Ecuador, Mexico, and Venezuela, Friendship Day is celebrated on February 14, Valentine’s Day, and on February 15, the US celebrates Friendship Day.
Tangoe decided to expand its celebration of International Day of Friendship by featuring pairs of—you guessed it—international friends on our blog! Each day this week, we’ll post a new pair of friends and tell you a little bit about how they make their international friendship work.
Our first international friendship features Frank Calandra in the US and Nanjappa Bopaiah from India. Frank oversees global finance, including the Billing Team which was recently created in Bengaluru, led by Nanjappa. To stay in sync, Frank and Nanjappa hold bi-weekly two-on-one and weekly team calls with Tangoe’s finance managers. Microsoft Teams makes communicating internationally much easier since they can chat and send files at the drop of a hat. In the past few months, Frank traveled to Bengaluru to visit the team… and they even had time to play a game of cricket!
